Overview

Minnesota Cannabis Services is seeking a Vice President of Legal & Compliance to lead the legal and compliance functions for clients across multiple markets in the cannabis industry. This role holds full responsibility for legal strategy, regulatory compliance, corporate governance, and managing an in-house legal team. The position is ideal for an attorney eager to take on significant responsibilities and impacting a fast-growing and heavily regulated industry.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide legal insight and strategic advice partnering with leadership and client executives.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local cannabis laws for diverse markets.
  • Architect and implement comprehensive governance and compliance frameworks.
  • Monitor legislative developments and engage with lawmakers and industry coalitions.
  • Manage a team of attorneys, paralegals, and legal professionals to deliver high-quality work.
  • Lead real estate and transactional work for cannabis facilities.
  • Manage zoning and land use matters and facilitate approvals with municipalities.
  • Oversee litigation strategy and manage relationships with outside counsel.
  • Identify and mitigate legal risks through proactive programs and compliance audits.

Required skills

  • Juris Doctor with active bar membership
  • 8+ years of legal experience in senior in-house leadership
  • Experience in multi-state regulatory compliance in cannabis or similarly regulated industries
  • Strong management and development skills for legal operations teams
  • High-volume leasing and zoning experience across jurisdictions
  • Genuine enthusiasm for technology and AI in legal practice
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Sound judgment and decision-making abilities
