Overview

Kovitz Shifrin Nesbit is seeking a Real Estate Tax Attorney to join their team in Homewood, Illinois. This role focuses on property tax appeals, real estate law, and valuation matters, making it ideal for attorneys looking to develop their expertise in a specialized area of tax law.

Key responsibilities

  • Draft and file property tax appeals, complaints, and legal briefs
  • Analyze property valuations, assessment data, and financial records
  • Manage appeals across Cook County Assessor, Board of Review, and Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board
  • Handle complex commercial and development property matters
  • Support Circuit Court tax objection cases
  • Assist with tax incentives (6b, 7, 8, TIF programs)
  • Communicate with clients on strategy, status, and outcomes
  • Coordinate with assessors, government agencies, and appraisers
  • Manage deadlines, filings, and appeal dockets

Required skills

  • J.D. + Active Illinois Bar License
  • 2+ years of experience in property tax appeals, real estate, or related field
  • Experience drafting legal documents and managing filings
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to interpret valuation data
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines independently
  • Direct experience with Cook/Collar County tax appeal systems
  • Exposure to commercial real estate or development projects
  • Familiarity with tax incentive programs (6b, 7, 8, TIF)
