Job Description

Overview

The Lead Systems Engineer for High Performance Computing (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) at Princeton University is part of the Advanced Systems team within Research Computing. This role involves engaging with faculty, researchers, and IT staff to design, install, and manage computing systems that support research, particularly in AI. Responsibilities include providing technical leadership, developing documentation, and troubleshooting system-related issues in HPC and AI environments.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, maintain, troubleshoot, and refine HPC/AI cluster infrastructure
  • Partner with colleagues on data management to align cluster designs
  • Develop data-transfer pathways for AI computing workloads
  • Establish best practices for cluster management to support AI workloads
  • Enhance monitoring infrastructure for research computing systems
  • Define and drive technical strategy for AI and data-intensive HPC
  • Identify and pilot researcher-facing systems that accelerate AI research
  • Lead implementation of automation-driven infrastructure practices
  • Provide technical mentorship to systems specialists
  • Advise leadership on strategic investments in research infrastructure
  • Monitor HPC clusters for abnormalities and resolve issues

Required skills

  • 10+ years managing advanced research computing systems
  • Strong Linux system administration and troubleshooting
  • Experience in scripting with bash, Python, and/or Perl
  • Proficient networking in HPC environments
  • Experience with software management in research computing
  • Job scheduling experience with SLURM
  • Strong communication skills across diverse communities
  • Proven collaboration skills for system infrastructure challenges
  • Knowledge of data privacy and security procedures
