Overview

Our client, grower/retailer/wholesaler of Spring annuals and perennials, Fall mums and Christmas poinsettias and trees, is seeking an Assistant Greenhouse Manager with excellent long-term potential for growth/succession. The Role: Full time, permanent position Normal hours: 8AM 6PM six to seven days a week; 7 days a week during the busy season (end of April to mid June). Closed on Christmas and Easter Sunday. Open July 4 th and Memorial Day. Will learn all aspects of the operations including: POS system Inventory Product categories Purchasing Employee scheduling Finance Nursery operation Retail operations All daily policies, practices and procedures Responsibilities: Function as a layer of management over retail sales. Come up to speed on all merchandising, labels, categories and POS systems. Learn the wholesale side of the business working with the current Administrative Assistant, including fundraising, pricing and orders. Come up to speed on material (pots, trees, seeds, liners) ordering. Act as a de facto HR person on employee scheduling, ensuring time, attendance, and workplace coverage. Come up to speed on finance programs including QuickBooks, bank reconciliation, Excel spreadsheets, and POS system/cash deposits. Manage nursery stock (trees and shrubs) ordering. Build a positive working relationship with the Head Grower and their team. Maintain and improve on the Fall Mum Program in September. First Year Goals & Objectives: Review and oversee deposits and review bank reconciliations. Review and make suggestions to improve on the POS systems. Review and make suggestions to improve on inventory control procedures. Staff development: Recruit, invest, train, and develop personnel for leadership and other opportunities. Work with Retail Manager to ensure proper business focus and review ideas for new business growth and improving the retail operation. Improve the bottom line for a "for profit business." The ideal candidate: 2 or 4 year technical degree in horticulture or equivalent Highly desired, not required Retail nursery/greenhouse operations background including running a sales area/garden center and experience in plant care. Knowledge of a POS system is key. Ability to work in a multicultural environment is a must. Ability to take ownership in an autonomous work environment. Compensation: Base salary + bonus Bonus depends on individual and company performance. No specific percentage target is typically offered. Benefits: Extra stipend ($3k) specifically for healthcare costs if individual does not have benefits already. Owner is looking into an IRA plan very soon to have something else to offer.
