Job Description

Overview

Amherst College is seeking a Tax Manager to oversee the institution's tax strategy and ensure compliance with applicable tax laws. This full-time position involves managing various tax responsibilities and collaborating within the Office of the Controller to enhance financial oversight.

Key responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws
  • Conduct annual reviews for Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT)
  • Administer and prepare IRS Form 990 and 990-T, and other necessary tax forms
  • Manage Non-Resident Alien (NRA) taxation for international payments
  • Oversee the administration of IRS Form 1098-T for students
  • Assist in monitoring tax-exempt bond compliance
  • Serve as backup for the Assistant Controller in investment accounting
  • Lead selective projects and analyses as needed by finance leadership

Required skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in finance or accounting
  • 3 to 5 years of related experience
  • In-depth knowledge of IRS 501(c)(3) tax regulations
  • Experience with Forms 990 and 990T
  • Ability to interpret complex IRS regulations and rulings
  • Knowledge of GAAP and higher education financial statements
  • Proficiency in Workday, Microsoft Excel, Tax Navigator or similar systems
  • Excellent communication skills to explain tax implications to non-financial stakeholders
