Overview

The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) is seeking a Staff Attorney for their Racial Justice Center. This role involves community-centered legal advocacy focusing on racial and economic justice, environmental issues, and restorative efforts across New York State. The position requires collaboration with various departments within NYCLU and emphasizes advocacy, litigation, and legislative engagement.

Key responsibilities

  • Engage in community-centered legal advocacy
  • Review state and local legislation and engage in legislative advocacy
  • Conduct pre-litigation analysis and factual investigations
  • Collaborate with the legal department on litigation strategies
  • Develop and conduct litigation in federal and state courts
  • Build relationships with civil rights advocacy organizations
  • Provide expert commentary to the media and participate in publications
  • Work with staff across NYCLU for an integrated approach

Required skills

  • 3-5 years of relevant legal experience
  • Licensed to practice in New York State
  • Experience with litigation and legislative advocacy
  • Knowledge of racial justice issues
  • Strong research, writing, and analytical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects under pressure
