Overview

As a Staff Attorney at Liberty Mutual in Houston, Texas, you will manage moderately complex civil litigation matters, representing both the company and its policyholders. The role requires a strong understanding of legal principles, particularly in insurance law, and involves developing legal strategies, conducting negotiations, and mentoring junior attorneys, all while maintaining a commitment to ethical standards.

Key responsibilities

  • Independently manage all phases of litigation involving claims of moderate to heavy value.
  • Conduct comprehensive legal research and draft legal documents.
  • Lead settlement negotiations and participate in hearings, trials, and mediations.
  • Support Senior Trial Counsel in case handling through trial.
  • Develop, implement, and refine legal strategies for discovery and trial preparation.
  • Utilize advanced e-discovery tools and case management systems.
  • Provide strategic legal advice to clients and build trusted relationships.
  • Identify and mitigate legal risks associated with cases.
  • Design and conduct training sessions for Legal, Claims, and related departments.
  • Mentor junior attorneys and legal support staff.
  • Ensure legal documents are accurate and compliant with laws and regulations.
  • Implement process automation and workflow enhancements.

Required skills

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or LLB degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the bar in Texas.
  • Minimum of 5 years of trial attorney experience, preferably in insurance law.
  • Experience in handling construction defect cases is preferred.
  • Exceptional legal research, writing, negotiation, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in advanced e-discovery tools and legal case management software.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and lead junior attorneys.
  • Excellent communication and client relationship management skills.
  • Commitment to ethical legal practice and compliance with standards.
