Role Description The Opening Shift Lifeguard is a part-time, on-site role located at the DANVERS COMMUNITY YMCA in Danvers, MA. This position is responsible for supervising the pool area during opening hours, ensuring the safety of all swimmers and maintaining a welcoming environment. Day-to-day tasks include monitoring pool activities, enforcing facility and safety rules, responding quickly and appropriately to emergencies, and performing rescues and first aid when needed. The lifeguard will conduct pre-opening safety checks, test and record pool chemicals as directed, set up necessary equipment, and maintain cleanliness of the deck and surrounding areas. The role also involves interacting with members, answering basic questions about pool policies and programs, and collaborating with other staff to support smooth daily operations. QualificationsCurrent lifeguard certification from a recognized organization (e.g., YMCA, American Red Cross), including CPR/AED and First Aid for adults, children, and infants. Demonstrated ability to recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies, perform safe rescues, and follow established safety and emergency procedures. Strong observation skills, attention to detail, and the ability to remain focused and alert for extended periods. Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact respectfully with members, participants, and coworkers of diverse backgrounds. Reliability and punctuality, with the ability to consistently work early opening shifts and follow staffing and scheduling requirements. Comfort working in a team-oriented, community-focused environment; prior experience in aquatics or recreational facilities is preferred. Ability to meet physical demands of the role, including swimming proficiency, lifting equipment, and standing or walking for long periods. Minimum age as required by local regulations and YMCA policies; high school diploma or equivalent is beneficial.
