Overview

The On-Call Chaplain at Akron Children's Hospital provides compassionate and culturally sensitive spiritual and emotional support to pediatric patients, their families, and hospital staff during variable shifts, including evenings, nights, and weekends. This role is essential during times of crisis and aims to foster a healing environment consistent with the hospital's mission and values.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide spiritual and emotional support during on-call hours, including crisis intervention and end-of-life care.
  • Respond promptly to referrals, code events, and urgent chaplain requests.
  • Offer spiritual practices while respecting diverse beliefs of patients and families.
  • Serve as a supportive presence during stress or grief.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary care team to integrate spiritual needs into patient care.
  • Maintain readiness to provide chaplaincy support across all hospital units.
  • Uphold professional ethics, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity.

Required skills

  • At least one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) accredited by ACPE.
  • Demonstrated ability to support individuals from diverse faith traditions.
  • Strong interpersonal, listening, and crisis intervention skills.
  • Endorsement or credentials from a recognized faith tradition.
  • Experience in pediatric, hospital, or health care chaplaincy preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Outlook, Excel, Word or similar software.
