Overview

Oceanography Officers in the U.S. Navy, also known as METOC, serve as geophysical experts responsible for understanding and applying meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, and related sciences to ensure naval operations are conducted safely and effectively. They provide critical environmental data support to fleet and joint operations while leading teams and managing various assignments worldwide.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, exploitation, and dissemination of environmental data.
  • Ensure safety of navigation and freedom of maneuver for Navy forces.
  • Lead teams ranging from small units to large commands.
  • Serve as the geophysical expert at operational commands.
  • Operate in a variety of challenging billets, both at sea and ashore.

Required skills

  • Baccalaureate degree in a technical field
  • Understanding of meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, and geophysics
  • Data analysis skills
  • Leadership and team management experience
  • Eligibility for a Top-Secret security clearance
  • Completed college calculus and calculus-based physics series
  • Ability to meet Navy enlistment and commissioning standards
