Overview

The Tarbell Center for AI Journalism is seeking a Head of People and Recruitment to lead the development of HR systems and culture in order to expand the team to over 30 staff within the next two years. This role encompasses managing the end-to-end recruitment process, overseeing people operations, and enhancing workplace culture within a rapidly growing organization.

Key responsibilities

  • Partner with hiring managers to run effective recruitment processes
  • Draft and negotiate contracts and offer letters
  • Onboard new staff and fellows, ensuring smooth transitions
  • Develop and maintain staff policies
  • Monitor and improve job satisfaction
  • Plan staff retreats and organizational events
  • Manage payroll, taxes, and reporting across jurisdictions
  • Support program leads in project management and problem-solving

Required skills

  • 3-5 years of operations experience in HR or recruitment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Strong project management skills
  • Good judgment in assessing candidates
  • Generalist mindset with willingness to take on various tasks
  • Experience in accounting, budgeting, or IT (bonus)
  • Background in active sourcing or headhunting (bonus)
