Overview

The Tarbell Center for AI Journalism is seeking a Head of People and Recruitment to spearhead the growth and development of its team as the organization aims to double its staff size. This role encompasses the complete people function, focusing on recruitment processes, onboarding systems, and shaping organizational culture during a pivotal expansion phase.

Key responsibilities

  • Partner with hiring managers to design and implement effective recruitment strategies
  • Draft and communicate contracts and offer letters
  • Onboard new staff and fellows, ensuring they receive adequate support
  • Develop and maintain staff policies and oversee payroll and reporting
  • Translate high-level organizational principles into daily practices
  • Plan staff retreats and monitor job satisfaction within the organization
  • Collaborate across programs to enhance operations and impact

Required skills

  • 3-5 years of operations experience in HR or recruitment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong project management abilities
  • Good judgment and discretion in assessing candidates
  • Generalist mindset with a willingness to take on varied tasks
  • Experience in budget management and IT is a plus
  • Background in active sourcing or headhunting is preferred
