Overview

The Head of Automated Small Molecule Synthesis at Takeda Pharmaceutical is a key leadership role based in Cambridge, MA, within the R&D division. This position focuses on advancing Takeda's Digital Discovery & Development Engine by leading automation initiatives in small molecule synthesis, leveraging AI and advanced technologies to enhance drug discovery processes.

Key responsibilities

  • Define and execute the automation strategy for small-molecule synthesis.
  • Promote the adoption of automated approaches across the research community.
  • Establish closed-loop DMTA vision by integrating robotics and AI/ML.
  • Design end-to-end automated workflows for synthesis and purification.
  • Continuously evaluate and integrate new technologies for enhanced synthesis capabilities.
  • Track and report key performance indicators related to workflow efficiency.
  • Drive reliability engineering and ensure compliance with EHS and safety standards.
  • Contribute to patents, publications, and activities that highlight platform advancements.
  • Engage in data governance practices that promote learning across research portfolios.

Required skills

  • Ph.D. in Organic or Medicinal Chemistry or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years in pharmaceutical or biotech R&D, including small-molecule discovery.
  • Expertise in medicinal chemistry and cheminformatics.
  • Experience in building and scaling lab automation and R&D teams.
  • Proficiency with automated synthesis platforms and AI-driven DMTA.
  • Familiarity with LIMS/ELN and scheduling software.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.

  • U.S. Base Salary Range: $177,000.00 - $278,080.00.
