Job Description

Overview

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is seeking a Construction Manager to oversee the Richmond Highway Bus Rapid Transit project. This role involves providing leadership and management oversight for a large, federally funded capital program aimed at improving regional mobility and economic development.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and management oversight for construction of the RHBRT project
  • Direct construction oversight activities including documentation, progress tracking, and safety coordination
  • Manage and monitor construction activities for compliance with requirements and schedules
  • Lead procurement process for QA consultants and construction contractors
  • Supervise and mentor the Assistant Construction Manager and coordinate with construction management consultants
  • Monitor schedule progress, cost performance, and risk registers with Project Controls staff
  • Review engineering plans, contractor submittals, RFIs, change orders to ensure compliance
  • Oversee the implementation of the Quality Management Program
  • Serve as the county's primary contact for contractors, consultants, and funding partners
  • Conduct site visits and field inspections to monitor construction progress
  • Support risk management and issue resolution
  • Prepare and present technical briefings and project status reports
  • Attend public meetings and present project information to community stakeholders

Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning
  • Five years of progressively responsible transportation planning experience
  • Strong expertise in construction management and oversight
  • Experience with federally funded transportation or transit projects
  • Proficiency in project management for large-scale multimodal transportation projects
  • Familiarity with Quality Management Programs and engineering specifications
  • Strong communication and coordination skills
