Job Description

Overview

The Youth Shelter Worker position at Wisconsin Community Services offers both full-time and part-time weekend opportunities to support youth in a shelter environment. This role is vital for providing safe and compassionate care to young individuals, serving as a positive role model and assisting with their daily activities while fostering a nurturing atmosphere.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide direct support to youth in the shelter on all shifts, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times
  • Supervise youth in person without leaving them alone
  • Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) including hygiene, meal preparation, and recreational activities
  • Monitor residents' behavior and implement behavior management strategies
  • Maintain close communication with other staff members during shifts
  • Support youth with their individual care plans, including medication administration and health monitoring
  • Maintain accurate documentation of care in electronic medical records (EMR) systems
  • Facilitate conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques
  • Assist with light cleaning duties in the shelter

Required skills

  • Experience working with youth aged 12-17
  • High school diploma or GED/HSED
  • Knowledge of positive child/youth development
  • Ability to interact calmly with escalating youth and parents
  • Crisis response skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to multi-task and manage time effectively
  • Sensitivity to cultural, ethnic, and disability issues
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
