Overview

Amherst College is seeking a highly skilled Tax Manager to lead its institutional tax strategy while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws. This full-time position is based in Amherst, Massachusetts and offers an opportunity to engage in various accounting and special projects within the Office of the Controller.

Key responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws.
  • Conduct annual reviews to identify and report Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT).
  • Prepare and file IRS Form 990, 990-T, and other related state forms.
  • Manage Non-Resident Alien tax compliance and related reporting.
  • Oversee the administration of IRS Form 1098-T for students.
  • Assist in monitoring tax compliance for tax-exempt bonds.
  • Serve as backup for investment accounting administrative tasks.
  • Lead specific projects and analysis as identified by finance leadership.

Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting.
  • 3 to 5 years of related experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of IRS 501(c)(3) tax regulations.
  • Experience with Forms 990 and 990T.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and higher education financial statements.
  • Technical proficiency with Workday, Microsoft Excel, and Tax Navigator.
  • Strong communication skills to convey complex tax implications.
