Overview

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is seeking a Systems Administrator III-IV to maintain its Red Hat Enterprise Linux infrastructure for science data pipelines. This senior position requires deep systems expertise, operational ownership, and mentoring, contributing to mission-critical science delivery across global observatories.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and manage RHEL-based systems for science data flows
  • Lead transition to GitOps-driven infrastructure and applications
  • Migrate legacy services from Docker Swarm to Kubernetes
  • Develop automation tools in Python and SQL for monitoring and alerts
  • Serve as Level-3 escalation for incidents and conduct root-cause analysis
  • Triage and resolve escalated support tickets
  • Participate in agile development cycles for stakeholder projects
  • Validate software releases and prepare user documentation
  • Mentor junior and peer administrators in best practices
  • Occasionally travel to NRAO sites for support

Required skills

  • Expertise in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8/9
  • Strong knowledge of GitOps workflows and automation tools
  • Proficient in Python 3 and SQL for monitoring and reporting
  • Experience with Kubernetes and Docker Swarm
  • Familiarity with agile methodologies (Scrum/Kanban)
