Job Description

Overview

Duke Health is seeking a Surgical Technologist to join the Vascular Access Team, working weekends in Durham, North Carolina. This role involves assisting in the preparation and care of surgical patients, under the general direction of a professional nurse, while upholding the standards of compassionate care that Duke Health is known for.

Key responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation and care of surgical patients ranging from infancy to geriatrics
  • Maintain a sterile field and ensure a sterile environment
  • Prepare the operating room with appropriate instrumentation, equipment, and supplies
  • Perform safe and accurate counting of sponges, needles, and instruments
  • Demonstrate eagerness to learn and adapt to changes within the unit
  • Take calls and rotate shifts as required
  • Assist with the teaching of newly hired and student technologists
  • Communicate effectively with patients, staff members, and physicians

Required skills

  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program or equivalent military training
  • BLS certification required
  • Understanding of anatomy related to surgical procedures
  • Ability to work under pressure and respond to life-threatening situations
  • Knowledge of sterile technique and instrumentation
