Job Description: Job Summary The Student Intervention Specialist works primarily with students assigned to the Lansing School District Suspension Center at the Lansing Learning Hub. Streets 517 believes a suspension can be more than a consequence-it can become an opportunity for intervention, reflection, growth, and connection. Through intentional relationships, individual conversations, and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) experiences, the Student Intervention Specialist helps students process the choices and circumstances that brought them to the Suspension Center and develop healthier responses moving forward. This role works alongside school staff while maintaining Streets 517's unique role as a consistent, caring adult presence in the lives of students. Streets 517 is a faith-based organization, and the Student Intervention Specialist is expected to personally embrace and represent the Christian faith, mission, and values of the organization. Duties Student Relationships & Intervention (Approximately 45% Time) The primary role of the Student Intervention Specialist is to build healthy, trusting relationships with students and use those relationships as opportunities for growth and intervention. This will include: Engage students through consistent individual conversations, encouragement, and check-ins. Help students reflect on the decisions, conflicts, and circumstances that contributed to their suspension. Reinforce personal responsibility while communicating dignity, hope, and belief in each student's potential. Help students identify healthier responses to conflict, frustration, peer pressure, and other challenges. Identify students who may benefit from continued mentoring, relational support, or connection to Streets 517 programs.Social-Emotional Learning (Approximately 30% Time) The Student Intervention Specialist will plan and facilitate engaging SEL experiences designed specifically for students serving time in the Suspension Center. This will include: Develop approximately two SEL lessons or experiences each week and facilitate each lesson with both Suspension Center cohorts. Lead 30-45 minute sessions focused on areas such as self-awareness, emotional regulation, conflict resolution, relationship skills, empathy, and responsible decision-making. Utilize discussions, activities, games, scenarios, videos, and other non-traditional learning methods to make SEL practical and relevant. Continually adapt content based on student needs, engagement, and recurring challenges.Hub Relational Support (Approximately 15% Time) The Suspension Center will remain the primary responsibility of this position. When Suspension Center enrollment or needs are low, the Student Intervention Specialist may support other areas of the Lansing Learning Hub by: Building relationships and serving as a positive adult presence with Hub students. Providing encouragement, motivation, and informal student check-ins. Supporting designated students who may benefit from additional relational support. Assisting with appropriate Streets 517 programming and activities within the Hub.Communicate & Collaborate (Approximately 10% Time) Work collaboratively with Lansing Learning Hub and Streets 517 staff to support students and strengthen the Suspension Center intervention model. Maintain appropriate documentation of student interactions, communicate recurring needs and trends, and actively participate in relevant Streets 517 meetings, training, and organizational initiatives. Qualifications & Characteristics A personal and active Christian faith with a commitment to representing the mission, values, and Christian identity of Streets 517 through both character and work with students.
