Overview

Liberty Mutual Insurance is seeking a Staff Counsel to join their legal team in Portland, Maine, primarily working remotely. The role involves managing moderately complex civil litigation matters related to insurance law, providing legal advice, and mentoring junior attorneys while maintaining high ethical standards.

Key responsibilities

  • Independently manage all phases of civil litigation involving claims of moderate to heavy value
  • Conduct comprehensive legal research and draft legal documents
  • Lead settlement negotiations and participate in hearings, trials, and mediations
  • Support Senior Trial Counsel in case handling through trial preparation and management
  • Develop and implement advanced legal strategies for discovery and investigation
  • Utilize advanced e-discovery tools and legal case management software
  • Provide legal opinions and strategic advice to clients
  • Identify and mitigate legal risks associated with cases
  • Design and conduct training sessions for Legal and Claims departments
  • Mentor junior attorneys and legal support staff
  • Ensure compliance with legal documents and ethical guidelines
  • Identify opportunities for process automation and workflow enhancements

Required skills

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or LLB degree from an accredited law school
  • Admission to the bar in New Hampshire and in good standing
  • Minimum of 5 years of trial attorney experience, preferably in insurance law
  • Experience managing moderately complex litigation with favorable outcomes
  • General knowledge of insurance law and related litigation
  • Exceptional legal research, writing, negotiation, and analytical skills
  • Proficient in advanced e-discovery tools and legal case management software
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and lead junior attorneys
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to ethical legal practice and compliance
