Job Description

Overview

The New York Civil Liberties Union Foundation is seeking a Staff Attorney for its Racial Justice Center. This role focuses on advocating for racial justice, particularly in areas such as environmental racism and Indigenous rights, as well as engaging in litigation and legislative advocacy throughout New York State.

Key responsibilities

  • Engage in community-centered legal advocacy
  • Review state and local legislation and conduct legislative advocacy
  • Perform pre-litigation analysis and conduct legal research
  • Collaborate with the legal department on litigation strategies
  • Develop and conduct litigation in federal and state courts
  • Build relationships with civil rights advocacy organizations
  • Prepare and deliver testimony at public hearings
  • Provide expert commentary to the media and contribute to publications
  • Work across NYCLU departments to further the RJC's mission

Required skills

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience
  • Licensed to practice in New York State
  • Experience with litigation and legislative advocacy
  • Knowledge of racial justice issues
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent research and writing abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple projects under pressure
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
