Overview

The New York Civil Liberties Union Foundation is seeking a Staff Attorney for its Racial Justice Center, located in White Plains, New York. This role is focused on advocating for racial and economic justice, environmental justice, and restorative efforts, requiring collaboration across various departments to address civil rights and liberties issues throughout New York State.

Key responsibilities

  • Engage in community-centered legal advocacy allowing impacted individuals to participate in campaigns.
  • Review state and local legislation and engage in legislative advocacy related to racial justice.
  • Conduct pre-litigation analysis, including factual investigations and legal analyses.
  • Develop and conduct litigation in federal and state courts.
  • Collaborate with the NYCLU's legal department in developing litigation strategies.
  • Build relationships with civil rights advocacy organizations and represent the NYCLU in coalitions.
  • Prepare testimony at public hearings and draft public comments.
  • Provide expert media commentary and contribute to publications.

Required skills

  • At least 3-5 years of relevant legal experience
  • Licensed to practice in New York State
  • Experience with litigation and legislative advocacy
  • Knowledge of racial justice issues, including environmental racism and Indigenous rights
  • Strong interpersonal, relationship-building, and communication skills
  • Excellent research, writing, analytical, and communication abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple projects under pressure
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
