Overview

The Respiratory Therapist at Ochsner Health System provides essential respiratory care treatment and diagnostic services to a diverse patient population, including both in-patients and out-patients. This role involves managing oxygen therapy, artificial ventilation, and performing diagnostic tests such as arterial blood gas analysis and EKGs to enhance patient care and outcomes.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide respiratory care treatment and oxygen services to patients
  • Set up, monitor, and wean patients off oxygen therapy and artificial ventilation
  • Draw, analyze, and report arterial blood gases and EKGs
  • Educate patients and co-workers on procedures and treatment plans
  • Document all clinical information regarding each patient
  • Adapt care to meet the specific needs of various patient populations
  • Comply with established policies and procedures and regulatory requirements
  • Perform routine and advanced therapeutic procedures

Required skills

  • Current License as a Respiratory Therapist in the state of practice
  • Certification by the National Board of Respiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (to be obtained within 90 days of hire)
  • Computer skills necessary for data entry and information retrieval
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with Windows-style applications and relevant software packages
