Overview

The Special Education Teacher at New Haven Youth plays a vital role in creating an inclusive learning environment for students with diverse needs and disabilities. This position involves designing individualized instruction, managing classroom behavior, and collaborating with staff to promote student success.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver effective, individualized instruction using various teaching methods.
  • Create daily and weekly lesson plans aligned with Common Core guidelines.
  • Apply effective classroom management practices to ensure a safe learning environment.
  • Document teaching activities and student progress to support lesson planning.
  • Case manage IEPs and ITPs for assigned students, coordinating with staff and parents.
  • Direct teaching assistants and 1:1 aides for effective program delivery.
  • Collaborate with other teachers and staff to implement curriculum.

Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • California Education Specialist Instruction Credential eligibility
  • Master's degree in Special Education or related field preferred
  • Valid California driver's license
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance and DOJ Clearance
  • CLAD Certification or Education Specialist Instruction Credential
  • Prior teaching experience with adolescents preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel
