Job Description

Overview

The Special Education Para-Professional will assist in the supervision and instruction of children with special needs, disabilities, or delays in a supportive educational environment. Responsibilities include adapting classroom activities, monitoring student progress, and providing necessary clerical support to educators and therapists.

Key responsibilities

  • Assist in the supervision and instruction of children with special needs
  • Adapt classroom activities and materials under the direction of the special education teacher or therapist
  • Implement behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders
  • Instruct children with special needs one-on-one or in groups
  • Perform record keeping and clerical functions
  • Prepare and process food for assigned students
  • Monitor children to ensure a safe learning environment
  • Assist in the preparation of instructional materials
  • Drive a van or automobile to transport students if needed

Required skills

  • Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in Education or related field
  • One year of professional experience working with children with special needs
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to work with children in a patient and understanding manner
  • Knowledge of child development and behavior management techniques
  • Ability to maintain accurate records
