Overview

The Sign Language Interpreter at Northwestern Illinois Association (NIA) plays a crucial role in facilitating communication for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in K-12 educational settings. With a commitment to inclusive education, this position requires collaboration with educators to ensure all students have equal access to the curriculum, while also engaging in ongoing professional development within a supportive and mission-driven agency.

Key responsibilities

  • Facilitate communication between deaf or hard of hearing students and others in the school environment.
  • Support classroom activities by interpreting lessons and discussions.
  • Collaborate with teachers and special education staff to adapt instructional materials.
  • Promote inclusive classroom environments for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professional ethics in all interpreted communications.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and training sessions.

Required skills

  • Proficiency in sign language interpretation
