Overview

The Sign Language Interpreter at Northwestern Illinois Association (NIA) plays a crucial role in facilitating communication for deaf and hard-of-hearing students within K-12 school environments. The position involves interpreting lessons and discussions, collaborating with educational staff, and promoting inclusive learning experiences for students. This role operates for 177 days a year with opportunities for professional development and engagement in a supportive, mission-driven workplace.

Key responsibilities

  • Facilitate communication between deaf or hard of hearing students and others in the school environment.
  • Support classroom activities by interpreting lessons, discussions, and group interactions.
  • Collaborate with teachers, special education coordinators, and staff to adapt instructional materials.
  • Promote inclusive learning environments that encourage participation from all students.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism according to ethical standards.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay updated in sign language interpretation.
