Overview

L3Harris Technologies is seeking a Senior Specialist, Mechanical Designer to join their Waterdown, Ontario team. This role involves designing complex opto-mechanical and electromechanical components for advanced technology solutions in defense, security, and law enforcement sectors. The ideal candidate will navigate complex engineering assignments while contributing to the success of the company through innovative design practices and collaboration.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and analyze complex opto-mechanical and electromechanical products from concept to production using CAD tools
  • Solve technical problems and suggest improvements to systems
  • Complete complex engineering assignments requiring specialized knowledge
  • Contribute to project goals and departmental best practices
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to other staff members
  • Act as a lead on larger projects when necessary
  • Participate in design reviews as presenter or reviewer
  • Support the verification and validation of new product designs
  • Keep abreast of industry trends and technologies

Required skills

  • Proficiency in FEA and CFD analysis, preferably with ANSYS
  • Experience with 3D CAD systems, preferably SolidWorks
  • Knowledge of Matlab or equivalent mathematical applications
  • Familiarity with mechanical dynamics, vibration, and strength of materials
  • Understanding of opto-mechanical design principles
  • Experience with manufacturing techniques including machining, casting, sheet metal, and composites
  • Knowledge of rapid prototyping techniques
  • Strong communication skills and ability to prepare detailed technical reports
  • Technical leadership skills
