Overview

FM is seeking a Senior Research Scientist specializing in material flammability, fire dynamics, and Lithium-ion battery safety to join their team in Norwood, Massachusetts. The role involves conducting research to prevent or control industrial property loss through innovative scientific knowledge and engineering solutions.

Key responsibilities

  • Conduct research projects on flammability, fire spread, and heat transfer in fires from solids and Lithium-ion batteries
  • Understand fire behavior at medium and large scales via bench-scale experiments and theoretical models
  • Develop and validate Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models
  • Manage all aspects of project management including proposals, execution, and reporting
  • Integrate experimental and theoretical studies with advanced flame diagnostics

Required skills

  • PhD in Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or related fields
  • Strong background in combustion, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, material science, and applied mathematics
  • Extensive experience in experimental methods in thermal fluids and material flammability
  • Understanding of numerical methods associated with combustion and fire
  • Research experience with advanced laser diagnostics and experimental measurement in turbulent flames
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven problem-solving skills
