Job Description

Overview

Viken Detection is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer on a contract basis to enhance ongoing product development efforts. The role requires a hands-on approach to improving designs, building prototypes, and ensuring real-world performance in a collaborative onsite environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and improve components and systems based on existing products
  • Develop and release mechanical designs using Onshape
  • Drive improvements in performance, manufacturability, and reliability
  • Support testing, root cause analysis, and design iteration
  • Prototype and evaluate alternative design approaches
  • Contribute to system integration (mechanisms, motion systems, assemblies)
  • Develop and refine assembly and test processes
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, and field teams
  • Build, assemble, and validate prototypes and hardware hands-on

Required skills

  • 8+ years of mechanical design experience
  • Strong proficiency with Onshape
  • Experience with machined parts, sheet metal, plastics, mechanisms, power transmission, and thermal systems
  • Experience with testing, debugging, and iterative design
  • Strong understanding of DFM and practical manufacturing considerations
  • Hands-on capability in building and validating designs independently
  • Experience with electromechanical systems and system integration
  • Experience with large weldments and structural design (FEA a plus)
  • Background in reliability, failure analysis, or assembly/test process development
