Overview

The Senior Director, AIRx Medicinal Chemistry at Takeda Pharmaceutical will lead the AIRx initiative, focusing on AI-enhanced drug design and development. This role demands a deep understanding of medicinal chemistry and effective collaboration in a fast-paced, autonomous environment, with the goal of delivering innovative medicines to the clinic swiftly and efficiently.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and optimize drug candidates using deep SAR intuition and multi-parameter optimization.
  • Integrate AI/ML-generated design proposals with medicinal chemistry judgment, critically evaluating computational outputs.
  • Provide strategic oversight of CRO synthesis programs, defining compound lists and reviewing synthetic routes.
  • Interpret structural biology data to guide optimization efforts.
  • Stay current with competitive chemical matter and emerging chemistry approaches.
  • Contribute to AI/ML training datasets by ensuring standardized experimental data capture.

Required skills

  • PhD in medicinal chemistry or organic chemistry
  • 12-15+ years of drug discovery experience
  • Expertise in SAR-driven design and ADME optimization
  • Experience directing CRO-based chemistry programs
  • Knowledge of AI/ML design tools
  • Familiarity with structure-based drug design
  • Experience in therapeutic areas relevant to Takeda's research
