Job Description

Overview

Amherst College is seeking a full-time Research Assistant in Biology to contribute to research on tissue organization during the embryonic development of sea anemones. This role involves conducting laboratory research, mentoring undergraduate students, and assisting with lab management in the Ragkousi lab.

Key responsibilities

  • Conduct protein biochemistry in sea anemone cell extracts, including protein purification and detection
  • Perform in situ detection of RNA expression in developing embryos
  • Utilize confocal microscopy for imaging of sea anemone embryos and cells
  • Quantify images and RNA sequencing data using basic bioinformatic tools
  • Maintain animal husbandry, including feeding, cleaning, and performing crosses
  • Train undergraduate students in basic laboratory techniques
  • Assist with lab management and supervise 3-5 undergraduate students

Required skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in Molecular Biology
  • 1 to 3 years of related experience
  • Knowledge of molecular biology techniques, particularly protein biochemistry
  • Experience with microscopes and confocal microscopy
  • Familiarity with analytical/bioinformatic tools
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
