Overview

The Relay Technician Trainee role at PacifiCorp is an entry-level position designed to train candidates in the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of substation protection and control systems. The program combines hands-on experience with formal technical coursework and mentorship from experienced technicians, preparing trainees for a future journeyman-level position.

Key responsibilities

  • Attend technician training schools to learn relay standards and theory
  • Assist Relay Technicians with installation, maintenance, and testing of substation equipment
  • Keep records and files of work performed, outages, and equipment
  • Participate in diagnostic testing of substation equipment under supervision
  • Operate substation equipment in accordance with safety protocols
  • Respond to emergency conditions and maintain responsibility for assigned tools and equipment

Required skills

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Certification in an electrical apprenticeship program
  • Basic computer skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, and Internet)
  • Good driving record and ability to obtain a CDL
  • Strong ability to follow safety policies and procedures
  • Passed relay seminar exam
