Job Description

Overview

The Payroll Manager will oversee end-to-end payroll operations for a client in Rockville, MD. This role involves ensuring compliance with federal and multi-state regulations while leading payroll process improvements and managing high-volume payroll operations in a collaborative finance and HR environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Oversee full-cycle payroll processing for multi-state employees, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Manage payroll calculations, including wages, bonuses, commissions, and tax withholdings.
  • Ensure compliance with payroll tax filings and year-end processes.
  • Lead payroll audits and reconciliations.
  • Supervise and mentor payroll staff for quality and efficiency.
  • Maintain and enhance payroll systems and internal controls.
  • Partner with HR and Accounting to ensure integration of employee data.
  • Manage relationships with third-party payroll providers.
  • Respond to employee payroll inquiries and resolve discrepancies.
  • Support audits by preparing documents and responding to requests.
  • Identify and implement process improvements in payroll operations.
  • Prepare internal reporting and support special projects.

Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of payroll experience, including multi-state payroll processing.
  • Experience in a payroll leadership or supervisory role.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll regulations and tax compliance.
  • Experience with payroll systems such as ADP, Workday, or UKG.
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs).
  • Strong understanding of general ledger impact and payroll reconciliations.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
