Overview

Oceanography Officers in the U.S. Navy, also known as METOC, are specialized in the fields of meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, and geophysics. Their primary mission is to gather and analyze environmental data to support Navy operations, ensuring safety and freedom of maneuver in various maritime environments.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, exploitation, and dissemination of environmental data.
  • Ensure safety of navigation and access to denied waters.
  • Manage teams ranging from small units to large commands.
  • Serve as the geophysical expert at operational commands.
  • Work in diverse environments with various scope and responsibilities.

Required skills

  • Baccalaureate degree in a technical field, preferably with a GPA of 2.8 or greater.
  • Completed full college calculus and physics series with specified averages.
  • Eligibility for sea duty and worldwide assignments.
