Overview

Oceanography Officers in the U.S. Navy, also referred to as METOC, are specialists in meteorology and oceanography responsible for understanding and applying various geophysical sciences to support Navy operations. Their role is vital in ensuring safety, navigation, and operational effectiveness across a variety of environments, including at sea and ashore.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, exploitation, and dissemination of environmental data
  • Provide timely support to fleet and joint operations
  • Ensure safety of navigation and freedom to maneuver
  • Lead teams of varying sizes, from small detachments to large commands
  • Serve as the sole geophysical expert at operational commands
  • Engage in a variety of operational billets with increasing responsibility

Required skills

  • Expertise in meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, bathymetry, and geophysics
  • Data analysis and environmental science knowledge
  • Leadership experience
  • Must complete a full college calculus series and college-level physics series
  • Eligibility for a Top-Secret security clearance
