Overview

Oceanography Officers, also known as METOC, are geophysical experts in the Navy responsible for understanding and applying meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, bathymetry, geophysics, and astrometry. They play a crucial role in ensuring the U.S. Navy has the freedom to operate in the physical environment, supporting operations both at sea and ashore with a variety of responsibilities and challenges.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, exploitation, and dissemination of environmental data.
  • Ensure safety of navigation and access to denied waters.
  • Increase the lethality of Navy forces by applying environmental data.
  • Lead small and large teams in diverse operational billets.
  • Serve as the geophysical expert at operational commands.
