Job Description

Overview

Oceanography Officers, also known as METOC, serve as the Navy's geophysical experts, responsible for understanding and applying meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, and related fields. They ensure that the U.S. Navy can operate effectively by providing timely and relevant environmental support to fleet operations, both at sea and ashore.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, and dissemination of environmental data.
  • Ensure safety of navigation and increase the lethality of Navy forces.
  • Lead teams ranging from small deployable units to large commands.
  • Serve as the geophysical expert at an operational command.
  • Work in various challenging operational billets with increasing scope and responsibility.

Required skills

  • Baccalaureate degree in a technical field, preferably physics, meteorology, or engineering.
  • Ability to meet Navy enlistment or commissioning standards.
  • Qualification for sea duty and a Top-Secret security clearance.
  • Completion of a full college calculus series and calculus-based physics series with specified minimum averages.
