Overview

Oceanography Officers, also referred to as METOC, are the Navy's experts in meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, bathymetry, and geophysics. They are responsible for providing crucial environmental data to support fleet operations and ensure the U.S. Navy's freedom of action at sea and beyond.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, exploitation, and dissemination of environmental data.
  • Ensure the safety of navigation and access to denied waters.
  • Increase maneuverability and lethality of Navy forces.
  • Serve as the geophysical expert at operational commands.
  • Lead teams from small deployable units to large commands.

Required skills

  • Baccalaureate degree in a technical field (preferably physics, oceanography, meteorology, etc.)
  • Completion of college calculus and physics series with minimum required grades.
  • Eligibility for sea duty and a Top-Secret security clearance.
  • Leadership and data processing skills.
