Job Description

Overview

Oceanography Officers, also known as METOC, are the Navy's experts in meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, and related fields. Their mission is to utilize environmental data to ensure the U.S. Navy can operate freely and effectively in a variety of conditions, while also deterring aggression and maintaining the freedom of the seas.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide timely and relevant support to fleet and joint operations.
  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, exploitation, and dissemination of environmental data.
  • Ensure safety of navigation and freedom to maneuver in denied waters.
  • Lead teams of 3-4 personnel to over 400 personnel.
  • Serve as the geophysical expert at operational commands.
