Overview

Oceanography Officers, known as METOC, are the Navy's experts in meteorology and oceanography, responsible for ensuring freedom of action at sea and the success of military operations. They support fleet and joint operations through the collection and analysis of environmental data while leading teams in diverse and challenging environments, both at sea and ashore.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, and dissemination of environmental data.
  • Ensure safety of navigation and access to denied waters.
  • Increase the lethality of Navy forces.
  • Serve as the geophysical expert at operational commands.
  • Manage teams ranging from small deployable units to large commands.
