Overview

Oceanography Officers in the U.S. Navy, also referred to as METOC, serve as the Navy's geophysical experts. They are tasked with integrating various scientific disciplines such as meteorology, oceanography, and geophysics to support naval operations and ensure safe navigation and operational effectiveness across the globe.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide timely and relevant support to fleet and joint operations
  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, exploitation, and dissemination of environmental data
  • Ensure safety of navigation and access to denied waters
  • Lead teams ranging from small deployable units to large commands
  • Serve as the geophysical expert at an operational command
