Job Description

Overview

Oceanography Officers, also called METOC, serve as the Navy's geophysical experts in meteorology, oceanography, and related fields. Their mission includes interpreting environmental data to ensure operational success and safety for the U.S. Navy by supporting fleet operations and maintaining freedom of the seas.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, exploitation, and dissemination of environmental data.
  • Provide timely support to fleet and joint operations.
  • Ensure safety of navigation and freedom to maneuver at will.
  • Lead teams ranging from small deployable units to large commands.
  • Serve as the sole geophysical expert at an operational command.

Required skills

  • Knowledge in meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, bathymetry, geophysics, and environmental science.
  • Experience in data analysis and naval operations.
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field such as physics, meteorology, or engineering.
  • Completion of college calculus and physics series.
  • Eligibility for sea duty and a Top-Secret security clearance.
