Overview

The Oceanographer/Meteorologist in the US Navy serves as a geophysical expert, applying various fields such as meteorology and oceanography to support military operations. This role includes leading teams and providing environmental data to ensure safe navigation and enhance Navy effectiveness.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead collection, processing, prediction, and dissemination of environmental data
  • Ensure safety of navigation and access to denied waters
  • Increase the lethality of Navy forces
  • Serve as the geophysical expert at operational commands
  • Lead teams ranging from small units to large commands
  • Serve in diverse operational billets both at sea and ashore

Required skills

  • Knowledge of meteorology, oceanography, and geophysics
  • Data analysis and military operations experience
  • Leadership and team management
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field, preferably in physics, oceanography, or related areas
  • Completed college calculus and physics with required grades
  • Eligibility for sea duty and Top-Secret security clearance
