Overview

Oceanography Officers, also referred to as METOC, are vital for the U.S. Navy's understanding of the physical environment, encompassing meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, bathymetry, and geophysics. They provide support for fleet operations by leading the collection and dissemination of environmental data, ensuring navigation safety, and enhancing operational effectiveness.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, exploitation, and dissemination of environmental data
  • Ensure safety of navigation and freedom of maneuver in denied waters
  • Lead small teams and large commands, acting as a geophysical expert
  • Serve in various operational billets both at sea and ashore
  • Participate in assignments worldwide in diverse environments
