Overview

Oceanography Officers, also called METOC, are the Navy’s geophysical experts responsible for understanding and applying aspects of meteorology, oceanography, and geophysics. They provide critical environmental data support to naval operations, ensuring safe navigation and enhancing the operational effectiveness of Navy forces.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, and dissemination of environmental data.
  • Ensure safety of navigation and access to denied waters.
  • Increase the lethality of Navy forces.
  • Lead small deployable units and large commands.
  • Serve as a geophysical expert at operational commands.
