Overview

The Oceanographer/Meteorologist role within the US Navy involves serving as a geophysical expert in meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, and other related fields. Officers in this position are responsible for providing critical environmental data to support fleet and joint operations, ensuring safe navigation, and leading teams in various challenging assignments at sea and ashore.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide timely support to fleet and joint operations by collecting, processing, and disseminating environmental data.
  • Ensure safety of navigation and freedom of maneuver for Navy forces.
  • Lead teams of varying sizes, from small deployable units to larger commands.
  • Serve as the sole geophysical expert at an operational command.
  • Engage in a variety of operational billets with increasing responsibility.
