Job Description

Overview

Oceanography (OCEANO) Officers, also known as METOC, are responsible for providing expertise in meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, and geophysics to support Navy operations. This role includes leading teams and ensuring safety and effectiveness in various environments, both at sea and ashore, enabling the U.S. Navy to maintain strategic advantage and deter aggression.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, and dissemination of environmental data
  • Ensure safety of navigation and access to denied waters
  • Lead teams ranging from small deployable units to large commands
  • Serve as the geophysical expert at an operational command
  • Participate in challenging operational billets with increasing responsibility

Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field, preferably physics, oceanography, or meteorology
  • Completion of college calculus series with a minimum 'C' average
  • Completion of college-level calculus-based physics series with a minimum 'B' average
  • Eligibility for sea duty and a Top-Secret security clearance
  • Experience in leadership and team management
