Overview

Oceanography Officers, also known as METOC, serve as the U.S. Navy's geophysical experts, focusing on the applications of meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, and related fields to ensure operational readiness and freedom of action. The role involves leading teams and providing environmental data to support fleet operations, with assignments both at sea and ashore in diverse global locations.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the collection, processing, and dissemination of environmental data.
  • Provide timely support to fleet and joint operations.
  • Ensure safety of navigation and access to denied waters.
  • Lead teams ranging from small deployable units to large commands.
  • Serve as the geophysical expert at operational commands.

Required skills

  • Degree in a technical field (preferred fields include physics, meteorology, oceanography, engineering, or mathematics)
  • Completion of college calculus and physics courses with specified grades
  • Leadership and team management skills
  • Experience in data analysis and environmental science
  • Eligibility for sea duty and Top-Secret security clearance
