Overview

Oceanography Officers, also known as METOC, are the U.S. Navy's experts in geophysics, meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, and bathymetry. They play a crucial role in supporting fleet operations by analyzing environmental data to ensure navigation safety and operational effectiveness in various theaters of operation.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide timely support to fleet and joint operations by leading the collection and processing of environmental data.
  • Ensure safety of navigation and freedom of maneuver for Navy forces.
  • Lead small teams and large commands of personnel.
  • Serve as the sole geophysical expert at operational commands.

Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field, ideally physics, oceanography, meteorology, earth science, engineering, or mathe
  • Completion of calculus and physics series at the college level.
  • Leadership and team management skills.
  • Ability to pass Navy's medical, vision, and fitness requirements.
